The status of the lyrical subject in the canzonier of Đora Držić

A literary-historical monograph dedicated to the canzonier of Džora Držić, the oldest (along with Šiško Menčetić), a famous Dubrovnik secular lyric poet, who in his Petrarchist poems established the kind of love discourse whose basic elements would be used by the entire later Croatian artistic lyric. The author analyzes the aforementioned canzonier from the aspect of the instantiation of the lyrical subject, a kind of psychological fiction which, similar to the category of narrator in a narrative text, allows the statements included in the lyrical poem to be perceived as the contents of a single consciousness, or rather the entirety of the speech act of a single speaker. This study represents a valuable contribution to the current knowledge of early Dubrovnik artistic poetry, as well as to the general theory of the lyrical subject.
