In this novel, one can identify with all those whose lives parents want to control and impose their wishes and rules. Vigdis Hjorth brings a painful story about a woman who was kidnapped from parental control and expectations, a story about a woman who followed her dreams and chose her own life path, and because of that was permanently ostracized from her family. In her youth, Johanna dared to divorce a man who seemed to be tailor-made for her father, abandon the imposed law studies, follow the vocation of an artist and leave Norway. She caused a scandal and for her parents this was unforgivable, because they were not parents who unconditionally love, protect and support their child.
