Književnost ranog novovjekovlja u Boki Kotorskoj: Hrestomatija za studente

Viktoria Franić Tomić, Slobodan Prosperov Novak

This student handbook is the most comprehensive presentation to date of the literary heritage of the Bay of Kotor in the early modern period, from the late Renaissance to the Baroque, in which the authors offer a chronological and thematic overview of the

The book begins with an introduction to the interliterary and cultural memory of Boka, emphasizing its Mediterranean, Croatian and Montenegrin affiliation, and the multi-layered identity (Catholic, Venetian influence, Slavic and Italian elements). This is followed by a chronology of historical and cultural events in Europe and Boka, with an emphasis on Venetian administration, navigation, wars and religious events.

The main part is a chrestomathy: a selection of lyrical, prose, religious, battle and documentary texts – from anonymous to highly authorial. The key Boka writers of the 16th–18th centuries are included: Ludovik Paskvalić (a Renaissance poet in Latin and Croatian), Ivan Bona-Bunić (a Baroque lyric poet), Rajmond Kunić, Ivan Ivančić, and authors such as Vicko Zmajević, Miloš Milošević and others. Also included are anonymous texts, prayers, poems, travelogues, and fragments from the Dalmatian-Boka circle (e.g., connections with Držić, Gundulić).

Each text is accompanied by commentary, contextualization, biographical information, and a bibliography. The book emphasizes the specificities of Boka literature: the seafaring motif, religious lyricism, baroque pathos, intertextuality with Italian and Croatian literature, and the role of Boka as a bridge between East and West.

This is not only a collection of texts, but also a thoughtful introduction to the consideration of Boka's written heritage - relevant for students, researchers, and lovers of Croatian literature in the southern Adriatic. The book shows how Boka Kotorska was a vibrant literary center, whose heritage is part of the wider Croatian and Mediterranean heritage.
