Jeffrey Archer's novel "Shall We Tell the President?" (1977, revised 1986) concludes the Kane and Abel trilogy with a tense political thriller. Florentyna Kane, daughter of Abel Rosnowski, has become the first female president of the United States and is trying to implement a revolutionary gun control law that would ban private ownership of firearms.

Young FBI agent Mark Andrews accidentally uncovers a plot to assassinate her, scheduled for March 10. The conspirators are a group of senators who see the law as an attack on the Constitution. The problem is that someone within the FBI is also involved, which means Mark doesn't know who to trust. The only clue is a coded message that points to six possible senators.

As Mark tries to narrow down the list of suspects, he becomes romantically involved with Elizabeth, an assistant to one of the senators, unaware that she is also part of the conspiracy. A ticking time bomb is ticking as Mark risks everything - his career, his love, and his life - to save the president.

Archer skillfully combines political intrigue with personal drama, raising questions about the price of power, the limits of loyalty, and how far people will go for what they believe. The novel provides a thrilling glimpse into the corridors of power in Washington, where life and death decisions are made behind closed doors.
