Dinko Šimunović

The collection "Short Stories" brings a representative selection of Šimunović's most famous prose, in which he depicts the tragedy of human destinies and the subtle psychology of characters through motifs of the Dalmatian hinterland, childhood, and social

Short Stories by Dinko Šimunović gathers the most important texts of one of the key prose writers of Croatian modernity. Šimunović's world is shaped by the landscapes of the Dalmatian hinterland, a closed and strict environment in which tradition, poverty and the personal aspirations of individuals collide. The author focuses on the inner dramas of the characters – girls, young men, peasants and lonely people – who are often deprived of warmth, freedom or love. His style is characterized by conciseness, lyrical imagery and deep psychological suggestiveness, while the plots often bear the characteristics of anxiety, repressed emotions and fateful powerlessness.

Šimunović's famous poetics combines realistic motifs with a modernist sense of symbolism and atmosphere. The short stories feature motifs of unrequited love, social injustice, childhood vulnerability and the destruction of dreams. The Profile edition brings the texts in an editorially revised version and provides the reader with a comprehensive insight into the author's oeuvre, suitable for school and academic use, but also for readers who want to become familiar with the foundations of 20th-century Croatian short prose.
