Tri čovjeka u jednom čamcu (A da se o psu i ne govori)

Jerome K. Jerome

A humorous classic about three friends (J., Harris and George) and their dog Monty who decide to take a boat trip down the Thames to take a break from their everyday worries, but their journey turns into a series of comical mishaps and hilarious situation

The work quickly became a world bestseller and one of the most famous humorous novels in English literature. The novel is written in the first person, from the perspective of “J.” (Jerome himself).

Three hypochondriac friends, tired of London life and imaginary illnesses, decide to embark on a two-week boat trip along the River Thames from Kingston to Oxford. They are accompanied by their dog Monty (a fox terrier). What was supposed to be an idyllic vacation turns into a chain of comical adventures: rain, faulty equipment, lost items, encounters with strange people, camping in the rain, arguments over cooking and endless petty disasters.

Jerome’s humor is gentle, sharp and self-deprecating. The novel is full of digressions – the author often deviates from the main plot to make witty comments on English society, history, literature and human nature. The characters of the three friends are particularly successful: J. (a romantic and storyteller), Harris (practical but not very capable) and George (lazy and cunning).

The work is both a humorous masterpiece and a subtle satire of Victorian society. The style is light, witty and very readable, which has made the novel a classic that is read with pleasure even more than 130 years after its publication.
