School textbook of arithmetic for the first grade of general lower secondary schools (1943): systematically introduces numbers, arithmetic operations, units of measurement and practical tasks, aligned with the curriculum of the time.
Calculus for the 1st grade of general lower secondary schools is a classic arithmetic textbook created within the framework of wartime curricula. The book systematically guides students through basic arithmetic concepts and skills: natural numbers, place value (tens, hundreds), four basic arithmetic operations with procedures and checks, division with a remainder, units of measurement (length, mass, time, money), and simple equations and fractions in the most basic scope. Each teaching unit contains a short, clear explanation, several solved examples, and a larger block of practice tasks, with a gradual increase in difficulty and practical, real-life contexts (commerce, measurements, schedules).
Methodically, the textbook combines precise, concise text with arithmetic schemes and emphasizes neat recording of procedures, checking results, and developing arithmetic habits. The language and spelling reflect the then-established norm (e.g. “obći”), which makes the edition interesting from a cultural-historical perspective: it testifies to the standard of mathematical education in the circumstances of the 1940s and to the way in which practical knowledge (measurement conversions, monetary calculations) was integrated into school practice.
