Afera Bernan

Afera Bernan

Joseph Kessel

Frenchman Pierre Roubier, after being tried in France for the murder of his wife, became a taxi driver in Lisbon.

He meets the seductive Katleen Dinver, the widow of a lord, and falls madly in love with her. But Pierre soon discovers that someone is following Katleen and suspects her of murdering her husband. Just as they are about to leave together to start a new life somewhere else, the truth threatens to tear them apart forever... The novel is a tense political-psychological thriller that follows a mysterious affair connected to influential people, political intrigue and moral dilemmas. Kessel explores the relationship between power, truth and personal responsibility through the story. The characters are faced with corruption, manipulation and social pressure, while trying to uncover the background of the Bernan affair. The work is written in Kessel's recognizable style - dynamic, journalistically precise and with an emphasis on psychological analysis of the characters.
