Samobor-grad: Povjesne crte o njemu i njegovim gospodarima

Vjekoslav Noršić

The first systematic monograph on the history of the city of Samobor and its feudal lords from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, published by Vjekoslav Noršić (1880–1953), a Catholic priest and historian from Samobor.

The work provides an overview of the history of Samobor from its beginnings in the Middle Ages to the modern era, with special emphasis on the feudal lords of the city and the Samobor estate. Noršić describes in detail the individual noble families that ruled Samobor (e.g. Babonići, Celjski, Frankopani, Erdődy and others), their mutual relations, conflicts, purchases and influence on the development of the city and its surroundings.

The book is written on the basis of archival sources, old documents and literature, which was very thorough for that time. The style is clear, concise and popular-scientific — intended not only for experts but also for educated citizens of Samobor and its surroundings. The author expresses patriotic pride in the past of his native region, which is typical of Croatian local historiography from the beginning of the 20th century.

This is Noršić's first major published work. He later expanded and supplemented the same topic, so 1942 a second, expanded edition was published. The book is important because it represents the foundation of later Samobor monographs and local history. Today it is considered a rarity and a sought-after antiquarian edition.

The work is significant for the study of the history of Croatian Zagorje, feudal relations in the late Middle Ages and early modern period, and the development of the Samobor region. Noršić later became one of the most prolific researchers of local history of Samobor and the surrounding parishes.
