Crtice iz prošlosti Šarengrada

Mladen Barbarić

A historical and journalistic work by Fr. Mladen Barbarić (1873–1936), a Franciscan, writer and amateur historian, about the past of Šarengrad, the Franciscan monastery, the church and life in Srijem from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

The book brings a series of short historical accounts and sketches about Šarengrad (a place on the Danube in Srijem, today Vukovar-Srijem County). The author focuses in particular on the *Franciscan monastery and the church, their founding, their turbulent past during Turkish rule, liberation from the Ottomans, and their reconstruction in the 18th and 19th centuries. He describes significant events, famous Franciscans, religious life, folk customs, and the influence of the Franciscans on the preservation of Croatian identity in the area.

The work is written in an accessible, patriotic, and religious tone, typical of Barbarić's style. It is dedicated to the abbot of the monastery and parish priest Feliks Gretschel. It combines historical data (partly based on archival sources and tradition) with narrative elements, so modern researchers also see it as a hidden narrative genre.

Published during World War I as an extraordinary edition of the Croatian Writers' Club in Osijek, it represents an important contribution to the regional history of Slavonia and Srijem. Today it is a rare book, valued among scholars of Franciscan heritage, local history, and early 20th-century Croatian literature.
