Oko Kupe i Korane: Mjestopisne i povjestne crtice

Radoslav Lopašić

A historical and cultural-topographical work by Radoslav Lopašić, depicting the past, settlements, fortifications, population and cultural heritage of the areas along the Kupa and Korana rivers. It is supplemented with contributions by Emilij Laszowski.

Around the Kupa and Korana. Topographical and Historical Sketches was published as a posthumous edition of the author's research, and was supplemented by Emilij Laszowski. The work is among the most important regional historical studies of Croatian historiography from the end of the 19th century.

The book brings a series of historical, geographical and cultural descriptions of the area along the Kupa and Korana rivers, especially the areas around Karlovac, Ozalj, Dubovac, Slunj and other places of the former Croatian Military Border. The author describes the development of settlements, old towns and fortresses, transport routes, churches, noble estates and significant events that shaped the life of the population of that area.

The special value of the work lies in the use of archival sources, old documents and local traditions. Lopašić combines scientific research with an accessible narrative style, so the book is not intended only for experts but also for a wider cultural audience. In addition to political and military history, attention is paid to everyday life, the economy, folk customs and the relationship of people to the natural environment.

Additions by Emilij Laszowski supplement certain historical data and bibliographical notes and increase the documentary value of the edition. The book thus represents an important source for the study of Croatian regional history, especially the area between Pokuplje and Kordun.

Today, Around the Kupa and Korana is considered a classic work of Croatian regional historiography. In addition to historians, it is valuable to researchers of cultural heritage, genealogy, historical geography and local history because it provides a wealth of information about the area that has played an important role in the defense and development of Croatian lands for centuries.
