Moj Dren: Roman o psima i ljudima

Danko Angjelinović

A novel about loyalty, training, and the trials that both humans and dogs face. Through the story of the dog Dren and his people, the narrator reveals the love, pride, fragility, and responsibility of coexistence.

My Dren – a novel about dogs and people by Danko Angjelinović is a warm and at the same time bitter prose about the bonds we form with animals and what those bonds say about us. At the center is Dren, a dog with a strong character: intelligent, sensitive and stubborn enough to remain his own. Through episodes of puppyhood, learning, first victories and missteps, we follow how the dog is shaped – but also the people around him: the owner who learns patience, the neighbors who project fears, the hunters and passers-by who see in Dren what they themselves lack – loyalty, courage, play.

Angjelinović tells the story simply and precisely, with many observations about dog behavior: how a dog reads moods, how it turns sadness into movement, and joy into rituals. In this mirror, human nature is also sharpened: vanity, short-lived anger, pride in small victories, quiet tenderness that is most clearly seen in small gestures – combing fur, a late-night walk, a piece of bread shared without a word. The plot moves between home, street and nature; the tension is not created by spectacular twists but by decisions that turn everyday life into moral choices: to let go or to keep, to punish or to patiently teach, to choose safety or freedom.

The novel is about dogs because it is full of scents, traces, the turning of the ear; about people because it raises questions: what is a good life, what does care that does not suffocate look like, what does responsibility towards the weaker mean. Due to the warm narrative measure and a series of convincing scenes, the book equally attracts dog lovers, readers of realistic prose and those looking for a story that calms but does not simplify. My Dren remains in the memory long after reading it – like the presence of a wet nose in the palm of your hand and a quiet, trusting gaze that teaches us how to be human.
