Fiona Valpy

A romantic historical novel set in Tuscany between the 1940s and 1970s. A young woman inherits a villa with a mysterious cypress garden and uncovers family secrets from World War II. Love, betrayal and Italian beauty.

The Cypress Labyrinth (2023) is a romantic-historical novel by British author Denise Valpy, set in two timelines. In the present (1970s), a young Englishwoman Rachel inherits a beautiful but neglected villa in the heart of Tuscany from her grandmother. In the garden full of cypresses, she finds an old stone statue and begins to uncover dark family secrets. In the second story, set in the 1940s, we follow a young Italian woman Elena who works in the same villa during World War II and faces difficult moral choices between love, loyalty and survival under fascist and Nazi occupation.

The novel combines classic elements of family saga, secrets of the past and romance with a rich depiction of Italian culture, landscape and history. Valpy writes in a warm, atmospheric style that evokes the scent of cypresses, olive groves and the Tuscan land. The book is rich in emotion, dramatic revelations, and a subtle depiction of how war shapes the destinies of ordinary people.

The Cypress Labyrinth is an ideal choice for lovers of historical novels with romantic and mysterious elements. The book is warm, moving, and visually very powerful, with an emphasis on the healing power of love and forgiveness.
