Haraldova mama

Haraldova mama

Johanna Frid

A sharp, sarcastic and tense drama about the conflict between two women - Claudia's wife and Harald's mother - who are waiting for Harald, who is returning from a rehab clinic, at a remote northern Swedish airport. A generational war in miniature.

Harald's Mom (2023) is the second novel by Swedish author Johanna Frid. The plot takes place almost entirely at an airport in the far north of Sweden.

Two women – Claudia, a thirty-year-old doctoral student and Harald's long-time partner, and his seventy-year-old mother – are waiting for the same plane. Harald returns home after six weeks in a rehab clinic. As the hours pass in the claustrophobic waiting room, a real psychological war develops between the two women, full of venomous remarks, subtle jabs, long-standing frustrations and open hostility.

Frid masterfully dissects the mother-in-law-daughter-in-law relationship – one of the most tense and complex family relationships. The novel is full of black humor, sharp dialogue and precise psychological observations. The author does not take the side of either woman, but shows how both suffer, both are right and both are impossible at the same time.

Through a tense conversation that lasts all day, Frid reveals deep layers of family dynamics, addiction, suffocating maternal love, partner expectations, and female competition. The novel is simultaneously funny, cruel, and deeply relatable.

Harald's Mom is a sharp, modernly written chamber drama that reads in one sitting and leaves a strong impression.
