YU-GENOCID: Bleiburg, Križni put, Udba

Ante Beljo

A non-fiction book by Ante Belja about post-war liquidations, repression by the Yugoslav authorities and the activities of the UDBA, from the perspective of Croatian political emigration.

YU-GENOCIDE: Bleiburg, Križni put, UDBA is a journalistic and documentary work by Ante Belja in which the author deals with three interconnected topics from recent Croatian and Yugoslav history: the events after the end of World War II at Bleiburg and during the Stations of the Cross, the post-war political persecutions, and the actions of the Yugoslav secret service UDBA against real and presumed opponents of the regime. The book brings together documents, testimonies, newspaper sources, and the author's analyses with the aim of showing the extent of repression against Croatian soldiers, civilians, and political emigrants, and the consequences that the communist system had on Croatian society.

The work was created within the framework of journalism that seeks to explore topics that were publicly discussed to a very limited extent during socialist Yugoslavia or were not systematically researched. The author pays special attention to the responsibility of the Yugoslav communist authorities for post-war liquidations, camps, political processes, and the actions of the security apparatus at home and abroad.

At the same time, the book should be viewed in the context of the author's political and journalistic engagement, which is why it represents an interpretative, rather than a neutral, historiographical work. The book is a valuable source for understanding the views of a part of the Croatian political emigration and the public on Bleiburg, the Way of the Cross, and the UDBA, but for a comprehensive study of these topics, a comparison should be made with recent historiographical research and archival material that became available after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
