Borivoje Jevtić

Swept Languages: Stories brings together two of Jevtić's short story collections – Antique Portraits and Other Days on the Miljacka – with stories about Bosnia, history, and human destinies.

Swept Languages: Stories published by Prosveta brings together two collections of short stories by Borivoj Jevtić - Old Portraits and Other Days on Miljacka. The book gathers twenty-six short stories created in the mature period of the author's creativity and provides a representative cross-section of his prose work.

Borivoje Jevtić (1894–1959) was a Bosnian and Serbian writer, playwright, director, theater critic and member of the Young Bosnia movement. In his works, he was permanently connected to Bosnia and Herzegovina, its history, customs and diverse human destinies. His prose is characterized by realism, lyrical tone and pronounced psychological characterization of the characters.

The cycle Old Portraits is dominated by stories inspired by past times, historical figures and old Bosnian city life, while Other Days on the Miljacka brings more intimate tales about everyday life, love, loneliness, transience and the moral dilemmas of ordinary people. Together they form a whole that faithfully depicts the spirit of Bosnia in the first half of the 20th century and represents one of the most important editions of Jevtić's short stories.
