Growing up as a boy in New York in the 1930s in a Jewish family of Russian origin, with plenty of other autobiographical elements.
The story is told from the perspective of Edgar Altschuler, a boy who grows from infancy to the age of nine or ten. Edgar is very similar to Doctorow himself (name, older brother Donald, mother Rose, father Dave). The narrative is a mixture of childlike innocence and mature, nostalgic reflections of the adult Edgar. The novel follows the daily life of the lower-middle-class Jewish Altschuler family in the Bronx during the Great Depression. The climax of the novel is Edgar's two visits to the 1939 World's Fair — a symbol of progress, the future, and American optimism (“The World of Tomorrow”). For the boy, the exhibition represents a marvel of technology, but also a mirror of the real, imperfect world.
