Djela XIV: Theatralia: Scenski pokušaji, članci o kazalištu i koncertima, dio drugi (1910.–1913.)

Antun Gustav Matoš

The fourteenth volume of the first edition of Matoš's collected works brings theater and concert reviews from the period 1910–1913, confirming Matoš as a top aesthetician and cultural critic.

The fourteenth volume of Theatralia: Stage attempts, articles about theater and concerts, part two (1910–1913) is part of the first edition of the collected works of Antun Gustav Matoš, published in 17 volumes by Binoza between 1935 and 1940. This edition represents the first systematic attempt to collect and organize Matoš's literary legacy and has lasting value for the study of Croatian modernity.

The volume gathers Matoš's last theater and concert reviews, essays and articles written between 1910 and 1913. In them, the author considers dramatic texts, actors' interpretations, direction, opera and concert performances, and cultural events of his time. His criticisms are characterized by high aesthetic demands, exceptional erudition and the ability to connect the Croatian art scene with European cultural trends. Matoš not only evaluates the artistic value of performances, but also considers the wider meaning of theater and music in the development of national culture, while maintaining a distinctive style characterized by wit, irony and polemical sharpness.

The volume was edited by Julije Benešić, while Milan Matoš collected and edited the writer's legacy. Thanks to their work, a valuable corpus of texts has been preserved that testifies to Matoš's contribution to Croatian theater and music criticism. This edition represents an indispensable source for the study of Croatian cultural life before the First World War and confirms Matoš as one of the most influential literary and cultural critics of his time.
