Pseći tango

Pseći tango

Aleš Čar

The second novel by the young Slovenian writer Aleš Čar, Dog Tango, is full of high energy. It is a novel that rapidly develops in the most unexpected directions.

The main character of the novel is a young writer from Ljubljana, Viktor Viskas. In August 1999, Viktor Viskas is left on the road, alone, without money, without a girlfriend, without an idea… He grabs at every straw that is offered to him, but everywhere he is greeted by surprise and emptiness. Viktor Viskas is a writer with a cat's name who is adored by dogs – his guardians and friends. Dog Tango describes the present and the present, here, in Ljubljana or in any transitional country, with fast rhythms and film frames. He describes the world seen through the eyes of a broken intellectual. Aleš Čar wrote a novel full of ironic observations about the political conflicts between the left and the right, about contemporary art, the proclamation of saints… Viktor Viskas, on a sultry August, represents a generation that grew up on the ruins of socialism, a generation that can only move towards a “better” today with a smile.
