Dosije Hebrang

Dosije Hebrang

Dragan Kljakić

Dragan Kljakić's book explores the mysterious case of Andrija Hebrang. Through archival materials and documents, the author analyzes his political rise, fall, controversial accusations, and tragic fate in prison.

The publicistic work "The Hebrang Files" by Dragan Kljakić is one of the first and most notable works from the early 1980s that publicly opened up a until then strictly guarded political taboo topic of Yugoslav socialism - the fate of Andrija Hebrang. Hebrang, a leading Croatian communist and secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, became one of the most controversial and tragic figures of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia after his dismissal and arrest in 1948. In the book, Kljakić reconstructs Hebrang's political path, from his activities in the illegal movement and leadership in the national liberation struggle to his internal party conflicts with the top of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia led by Tito. The author deals in detail with the accusations of treason, collaboration with the Ustasha regime and so-called "factionalism", as well as the circumstances of his imprisonment and mysterious death in the Belgrade Glavnjača prison in 1949. Drawing on available documents, hearing records, and contemporaneous testimonies, the book represented an important step in the subsequent reexamination of official communist historiography and the demythologizing of political processes in post-war Yugoslavia.

Jeffrey Sachs

In the book, economist Jeffrey Sachs presents an optimistic plan for eliminating extreme poverty by 2025. He argues that this is feasible with political will, because world wealth is growing, and poverty is not fate, but the result of inefficient systems.
