Abšalome, sine moj!

William Faulkner

William Faulkners Roman „Absalom, Absalom!“ ist ein Meisterwerk der Moderne. Durch komplexe Erzählperspektiven enthüllt er den Niedergang der Südstaatenfamilie und die Sünden des Rassismus in Amerika.

"Absalom, Absalom!", published in 1936, is considered one of the most powerful and ambitious works of Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner. Set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, the novel follows the obsessive life story of Thomas Sutpen, a man who appeared out of nowhere in Mississippi in 1833 with the goal of building his own large estate, creating a dynasty, and securing a powerful position within traditional Southern society. His grandiose plan, however, slowly collapses under the weight of his own moral failings, family secrets, and unresolved racial prejudice.

The plot does not unfold chronologically, but rather unfolds through multiple, intertwined perspectives of characters who years later attempt to reconstruct Sutpen's dark past. The central narrator, Quentin Compson, along with his roommate Shreve, dissects the family's downfall by drawing parallels with the biblical story of King David and his son Absalom. Faulkner uses his signature technical expression of long, winding sentences and a stream-of-consciousness approach to convey the weight of the past that haunts the post-war American South.

This monumental work of psychological depth and moral complexity raises universal questions about identity, guilt, legacy, and the impossibility of escaping one's own sins. "Absalom, My Son!" is an indispensable classic of world literature that still fascinates today with its structure and timeless power.
