The plot follows the lives of eight young women from high society after they graduate from the prestigious women's college Vassar in 1933. The story begins with the wedding of one of them and concludes with her funeral seven years later. Spanning this period, the author finds the perfect platform for a sharp analysis of the progressive intelligentsia of the interwar years.
