Pisma iz pustinje
A spiritual classic in which the author, through personal letters and meditations from the Sahara, describes the encounter with God, the power of prayer and the realization of the Christian calling in the silence and simplicity of the desert.
Letters from the Desert is the best-known and most influential work of Carlo Carretto, an Italian Catholic intellectual and former leader of Catholic Action who, at the age of 44, made a radical shift in his life by joining the Little Brothers of Jesus (inspired by the spirituality of Charles de Foucauld). The book is a collection of his profound meditations, letters, and personal notes composed during his years in the Algerian Sahara, where he lived in complete solitude, prayer, and physical labor. Through a simple yet exceptionally powerful and accessible style, Carretto addresses fundamental Christian themes: faith, adoration, the purification of the soul, love for one’s neighbor, and the pursuit of God’s presence. In the author’s experience, the desert is not merely a geographical location, but a state of mind—a place of liberation from the superficiality of the modern world and a setting for establishing a living, personal relationship with God. The 1973 Croatian edition (translated by Radosna vijest) reached a wide readership and exerted a significant influence on the spiritual literature of that era. This moving and timeless book remains an inspirational guide for all those who seek inner peace, silence, and an authentic lived faith amidst the challenges of everyday life.
