Osječki trgovi – Zrcala grada
A bilingual Croatian-English overview of sixteen squares in Osijek, exploring their history, architecture, and everyday life, accompanied by a map of Osijek that can also serve as a cultural-historical tourist guide.
Osječki trgovi – Zrcala grada by Zlata Živaković-Kerže and Margareta Turkalj Podmanicki explores sixteen city squares through history, architecture and everyday life. Combining historical research with urban and art-historical perspectives, the authors show how Osijek’s development can be understood through its public spaces.
From Holy Trinity Square in Tvrđa to Ante Starčević Square and Freedom Square, the book traces the origins, design and changing functions of individual locations. Places of trade, gathering and social interaction are considered alongside the buildings, monuments and surroundings that give them their character.
The squares become records of urban change, bringing historical events and cultural values into contact with residents’ experiences. Their design and symbolic meanings are examined within the broader setting of Central European heritage.
Accessible to a wide readership, the book offers residents a fresh perspective on familiar places and visitors an introduction to Osijek’s past. It also provides a starting point for further research, encouraging appreciation and preservation of the city’s shared urban heritage.
