55 godina Đakovačke gimnazije

55 godina Đakovačke gimnazije

Miro Šola, Hrvoje Miletić

An anniversary volume tracing 55 years of Đakovo’s grammar school, its institutional changes, teachers, students, and cultural, academic and sporting achievements.

55 godina Đakovačke gimnazije places the school’s history within the wider educational and cultural life of Đakovo. An introductory survey of local schooling provides the background for an account of the grammar school’s development and organisational changes.

Individual chapters cover the period from 1953 to 1993, the “Braća Ribar” grammar school, and the secondary and vocational education centres bearing the same name. The book also examines the Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer Diocesan Grammar School between 1972 and 1990, followed by the A. G. Matoš Grammar School, its new building and its award from the City of Đakovo.

Student creativity and achievement form an important part of the volume. Topics include the school choir, national competitions, international cooperation, publishing and sport. Further sections record the restoration of the relief of Prince Domagoj and the work of headmaster Mato Čolakić from 1993 to 2009.

An extensive section devoted to school graduates adds interest for former pupils and their families. Hungarian, English and German summaries complete this contribution to Đakovo’s educational and local history.
