Der erste Teil des Buches ist verschiedenen Vorstellungen von „Britishness“ und Identität gewidmet, darunter englische, schottische, irische, walisische, britisch-asiatische und schwarze Identität. Der zweite Teil analysiert dann die Beziehung zwischen Tradition und Erbe in der zeitgenössischen Kultur, während der letzte Teil einen Überblick über verschiedene Lebensstile, Subkulturen und Kulturpolitiken gibt, die die zeitgenössische Bedeutung des Adjektivs „britisch“ stark verändern.
