Sabrana dela 14: Rastureni dom

Sabrana dela 14: Rastureni dom

Pearl S. Buck

It is the third and final novel in the "House of Earth" trilogy, following The Good Earth and Sons. The plot focuses on the third generation of the Wang family—specifically Wang Yuan, grandson of Wang Lung and son of the warlord Wang Tiger.

The novel follows the young Wang Yuan through a turbulent period in Chinese history—a time of revolution, civil war, and the clash between old traditions and new, Western ideas.

Yuan was raised in the military environment of his father Tiger, but he himself has no desire for a military life or violence. He is more drawn to the land, agriculture, and poetry—the legacy of his grandfather Wang Lung. After a conflict with his father, Yuan leaves the family home and sets out in search of his own identity.

The story takes him to a coastal town, where he lives with his stepmother and stepsister, then abroad (the United States) to study agriculture, and finally back to a China that is even more divided by revolutions and ideological conflicts.

The novel depicts deep divisions within the family that mirror those within the entire Chinese nation in the first half of the 20th century. Buck masterfully portrays the inner conflicts of a young man searching for his place in a rapidly changing world.
