Djela Augusta Šenoe - Mladi gospodin, Prosjak Luka

August Šenoa

The young gentleman describes the life of chaplain Janko Lugarić, whose real name was Janko Puškarić (1801-1874), and he was a chaplain until his death in the parishes of Hrvatsko Zagorje, Pokuplje and Turopolje. Luka the Beggar is a novel by August Šenoa

The story of Luka the Beggar takes place in the small village of Jelenje along the banks of the Sava, in the 19th century. The villagers are lazy, dishonest and like to go to the inn, while only a few work honestly. Protagonist Luka often passes through Jelenje - he lived through a painful childhood and as an adult he engages in various, even illegal, jobs in order to survive. He is red-haired and bushy-haired, dressed in old rags. He falls in love with Jelenjanka Mara from a wealthier family and wants to become honest. However, Mara is in love with her neighbor Andra, even though their fathers are at loggerheads.

The Young Gentleman is a novel by August Šenoa that follows the life and moral decline of the young nobleman Mirko Čubr. After inheriting wealth, Mirko becomes arrogant and spendthrift, neglects family honor and indulges in a frivolous life in the company of self-interested friends. His love for the noble but poor girl Katarina is not enough to dissuade him from making bad decisions. In the end, his carelessness and recklessness lead him to ruin, leaving him alone and impoverished. The novel depicts the conflict between morality and decadence and criticizes aristocratic flaws.
