Proza 5: Banket u Blitvi III

Miroslav Krleža

Banquet in Blitva is a novel by Miroslav Krleža written in three parts that were published in 1938, 1939 and 1963.

The story is set in Blitva, a fictitious country in the north-east of Europe, which after centuries of foreign rule and political instability became an independent state under the dictatorial rule of the cruel lieutenant Barutanski. The story of the first two parts deals with the historical and political themes of Blitva and two prominent contemporary figures: the dictator Kristijan Barutanski and the renegade intellectual Niels Nielson. The third part, written much later, mostly concentrates on Nielson's life as a dissident, his personal doubts and various questions from the past and present that begin to haunt him.
