Priče iz biljnog svijeta

Franjo Dolenec

"Stories from the Plant World" by Franjo Dolenc, a Croatian biologist and educational writer, is a collection of short stories for upper elementary school grades, intended to educate children about the plant world through entertaining stories.

Dolenec, a professor of natural history, combines science and art: each story reveals the secrets of plants – from the oak tree, a symbol of strength, to the delicate flower of love – through anecdotes, legends and myths. Plants come to life as heroes: a brave oak tree fights a storm, a smart grass survives a drought, and herbs whisper the secrets of healing. The author uses plants as symbols of human virtues – patience, adaptation, togetherness – connecting them with folk tales and scientific facts. Stories such as "The Bark of the Oak" or "The Unusual Journey of a Flower" (similar to its sister "Stories from the Animal World") teach ecology, evolution and respect for nature.

The work describes the diversity of the plant kingdom: from tropical forests to Croatian meadows, emphasizing the cycle of life and ecological balance. Humor, poetry and illustrations make it irresistible for young readers, while adults recognize the depth of symbolism. Inspired by the author's lectures, the book encourages a love of nature in the midst of the industrial age. It is recommended as an introduction to botany and Croatian children's literature, along with similar titles such as "Botany Textbook" by the same author.
