Ovo je optužba, kleveta, osobna uvreda. Ovo nije knjiga, u običnom smislu te riječi. Ne, ovo je neprekidno vrijeđanje, ispljuvak u lice Umjetnosti, noga u tur Bogu, Čovjeku, Sudbini, Vremenu, Ljubavi, Ljepoti…čemu god hoćete.

Od naizgled rubnog književnog fenomena koji se čak i fizički javlja izvan matice – u notornoj izdavačkoj kući Obelisk u Parizu – četrdesetogodišnjak i autodidakt objavljuje svoj prvi, šokantni, kvazi-autobiografski roman. Dakle, od autsajderskog ekscesa ograničenog dometa, od anarhoidne, "asocijalne", individualističke, skandalističke geste koja se javlja u vrijeme kad je glavna moda zapadnog književnog života "socijalna literatura", Rakova obratnica se postupno ali sigurno pomakla prema centralnom položaju u matičnoj, američkoj literaturi, ušla u književnu predaju kao jedan od glavnih nasljednika i prijenosnika legitimne tradicijske struje od Thoreaua i Whitmana do bitnika i Normana Mailera. Pa, iako se ne moramo složiti s američkim pjesnikom Karlom Shapirom koji Millera 1960. naziva "najvećim živim autorom", ni sa samim Mailerom koji ga naziva »genijem« i tek nešto manjim Dostojevskim, danas svakako već posve jasno vidimo da je riječ o piscu koji je više od bilo koga oslobađajuće utjecao na naše doba, i time daleko nadmašio granice vlastite književnosti… On, da proširimo Mailerovu sliku, razmiče dlaku po dlaku s "Velikog mufa spoznaje".
