Pripovijetka smještena u vrijeme Francusko-pruskog rata (1870.–1871.), radnja započinje bijegom francuskih građana iz Rouena, pod pruskom okupacijom. Među njima je i Elizabeth Rousset, "Dunda", djevojka lakog morala, no dobrog srca.

Skupinu čine pripadnici različitih društvenih slojeva – bogati trgovci, aristokrati i časne sestre – svi duboko licemjerno osuđuju Dundu zbog njezina zanimanja. Međutim, kad pruski časnik zaustavi njihovo putovanje i uvjetuje im prolaz time da se Dunda s njim provede noć, situacija se mijenja. Isprva svi odbacuju tu ideju, podržavajući Dundino odbijanje, no s vremenom ju postupno, pod pritiskom i manipulacijama, nagovaraju da popusti – sve kako bi sebi osigurali nastavak puta.

Dunda na kraju pristaje žrtvovati se za dobrobit svih, ali nakon što ispuni ono što su od nje tražili, suputnici je ponovno preziru i ignoriraju. Pripovijetka završava prizorom ponižene i slomljene Dunde koja potiho plače, dok je ostali putnici hladno odbacuju.

Maupassant u "Dundi" oštro kritizira ljudsko licemjerje, društvene predrasude i sebičnost, stvarajući snažan portret moralno superiornog pojedinca koji biva žrtvom društvene hipokrizije. Pripovijetka je jedno od njegovih najpoznatijih i najvažnijih djela, prepoznato po svojoj realističkoj snazi i psihološkoj dubini.
