Razgovori s Goetheom

Razgovori s Goetheom

Johann Peter Eckermann

Eckermann's Conversations with Goethe, published in 1836 and 1848, are a collection of notes and conversations that Eckermann had with Goethe from 1823 to 1832. Eckermann's modest but precise style makes this work an authentic testimony to genius.

This work is a precious document on the life, thoughts and artistic attitudes of one of the greatest German writers, providing an intimate insight into Goethe's personality and his late creative period. Eckermann, Goethe's admirer and assistant, records conversations about literature, philosophy, nature, art and society.

Goethe shares his thoughts on writers such as Shakespeare, Schiller and Byron, but also on his own works, including "Faust". The conversations reveal Goethe's erudition, his interest in science (e.g. color theory), as well as his views on romanticism, classicism and the spiritual development of man. He often expresses thoughts on the balance between passion and discipline in art and on the importance of observing nature.

The book is not only a biographical record, but also a philosophical dialogue that reflects Goethe's wisdom and breadth of spirit. Eckermann also records everyday moments, such as Goethe's habits and conversations with friends, which makes it a vivid portrait of a great man. The work is structured chronologically, with an emphasis on the spontaneity of the conversations, which gives the reader a sense of presence in Goethe's circle. "Conversations with Goethe" are key to understanding Goethe's worldview and 19th-century German culture.
