Doktor Živago 1-2

Doktor Živago 1-2

Boris Pasternak

One of the most significant works of 20th-century Russian literature, the novel follows the life of Yuri Zhivago, a physician and poet, through the dramatic events of World War I, the October Revolution, and the Russian Civil War.

Yuri Zhivago grows up in Moscow in an aristocratic family, but loses his parents at an early age. He is married to Tonya, but fate brings him together with Lara Guichard, a passionate and unhappy woman married to the revolutionary Pavel Antipov (Strelnikov). Their love blossoms in a chaotic time, while Yuri faces moral and political dilemmas.

After being forcibly conscripted by the Red Army, he manages to escape and returns to his family, but the world he knows is falling apart. His love story with Lara becomes a symbol of personal and collective tragedy, while their fate reflects the turmoil of Russian history.

The novel is rich in philosophical and poetic reflections, exploring themes of freedom, love and human dignity. Due to its criticism of the Soviet regime, the novel was banned in the USSR until 1988, but it brought Pasternak the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958.
