Krvavi sabor križevački: Pripovijest iz hrvatske prošlosti

Krvavi sabor križevački: Pripovijest iz hrvatske prošlosti

Milutin Mayer

The historical novel The Bloody Council of Križevci by Milutin Mayer, first published in 1935, tells a dramatic story about one of the most tragic events in Croatian history – the massacre at the council in Križevci in 1397.

The plot centers on the Croatian Ban Stjepan Lacković, who, together with other nobles, opposes the centralist aspirations of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. At the council in Križevci, despite the king's guarantees of security, a surprise attack occurs in which Lacković and his supporters are killed, thus breaking the resistance of the Croatian nobility.

Mayer skillfully reconstructs the political intrigues, personal conflicts and social tensions of the time, portraying characters with deep psychological profiles. The novel not only presents historical facts, but also explores universal themes of betrayal, the fight for justice and the price of political power. Through dynamic narration and rich language, the author introduces the reader to a medieval world full of intrigue and moral dilemmas.

The Bloody Council of Križevci remains a significant work of Croatian literature, which not only educates about important historical events, but also encourages reflection on the complexity of human nature and political relations.
