Poezija i proza

Poezija i proza

Fran Galović

"Poetry and Prose" by Fran Galović is a posthumous publication that brings together selected poems and prose texts by one of the most significant representatives of the second generation of Croatian modernism.

Galović (1887–1914), born in Peteranac near Koprivnica into a poor peasant family, graduated from high school in Zagreb, studied philology in Zagreb and Prague, and worked as a professor. He was a member of the student movement and edited “Mlada Hrvatska”. He was tragically killed at the age of 27 in World War I at Radenković in Serbia, and was buried at Mirogoj; his death connects him with the “Club 27”.

His creative work, marked by stylized expression and deep lyrical melancholy, began in 1907 with the play “Tamara” and a poem about Ante Starčević. During his lifetime, he published four books: “Četiri grada” (poems, 1913), “Začarano ogledalo” (short stories, 1913), “Ispovijed” (1914). Posthumously: “Z mojih bregov” (1925). The book (216 pages) collects Kajkavian poems ("Kostanj", "Jesenski veter", "Crn-bel") and Štokavian ("Childe Harold"), short stories and fragments, emphasizing the themes of eternal aspiration, love, longing for homeland, fear of transience and elements of science fiction. The poems exude imagination, passion and dialectal charm, the prose - subtle psychology and fantasy.

Galović is a pioneer of Croatian dialect poetry, enriching modernism with Kajkavian expression and universal unrest. His oeuvre, compiled posthumously in 10 volumes (Benešić, 1942/43), inspires generations, making him a lasting legacy of Croatian literature despite his early departure.

Asmir Kujović

As one of the rare poets of today who has avoided the trap of so-called 'realistic' or 'narrative' poetry, Asmir Kujović has offered a kind of aesthetic guide from the anxiety of the 20th century in all his poetic works to date.

The intense saturation and density of this poetry make it impossible to read this book in one sitting. It must be taken slowly and measuredly, as each poem requires a longer process of reception.
