Zla kob

Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The novel is told as a journalistic reconstruction of the murder of Santiago Nasar. The story takes place in a small Caribbean town, where everyone knows in advance that Santiago will be killed by the Vicario brothers – Pedro and Pablo – in order to defen

Angela was returned to her husband after their wedding night because she was not a virgin, and she blamed Santiago for this, although it is not clear whether she was telling the truth. The Vicario brothers, despite numerous opportunities to give up, feel obliged to take revenge, although they do not truly want to.

The tragedy of the novel stems from the fact that the entire village knows about the planned murder, but no one reacts decisively enough to prevent it. Santiago dies without knowing why they want to kill him. The author uses a fragmentary structure, going back in time and presenting different perspectives, which further emphasizes the fateful inevitability of the event.

The novel explores themes of honor, fatalism, collective guilt, and the powerlessness of the individual in the face of social expectations.
