Megre comes to Fécamp after the suspicious death of Captain Le Klin, who was found dead after nightfall in the Rendez-Vous des Terre-Neuvas tavern. Although the death appears to be an accident, Megre suspects murder. Investigating the crew, the innkeeper, and the local residents, he uncovers motives related to jealousy, greed, and secrets. The key character is the young radio-telegrapher Jean-Marie Kanut. Through conversations and observation, Megre exposes the tragic truth, along with the melancholy atmosphere of the Normandy port.
