Maša Modić

Spider's Web by Slovenian writer Maša Modić is part of her series “The Mysterious Game of Fate.” The work combines romance and thriller, exploring themes of betrayal, greed, and uncovering the truth through the story of a woman trapped in a web of lies.

The main character, Klaudija, a successful designer, happily married to Matej, decides to quit her job. During a walk, she meets a witch who predicts her death at the hands of a blond man named Matej. Skeptical, Klaudija returns home and discovers that Matej is gone, and his employer confirms that he does not work there. Everything quickly escalates: she finds the body of her assistant Linda, and her belongings disappear. She realizes that she is not married – the marriage is fake, and Matej (really Sandi) is a fraud.

Her friend Sara, a co-worker, reveals herself as a conspirator: she and Matej and his brother Luka are planning to murder Klaudija in order to take over her factory. Sara has eliminated her former lover Uroš, and Julija, Klaudija's friend, also becomes a victim. Klaudija, pregnant, flees through a labyrinth of deception and violence. She is saved by Jan, Matej's brother, who confesses his love for her. Matej dies, and the criminals are punished – good wins, a happy ending with a new love.

Modića's style, simple and dynamic, with selected heroes, dialogues and descriptions of emotions, attracts fans of women's literature. The novel criticizes greed and false relationships, celebrating the intuition and strength of women. Part of Modića's productive phase (over 20 novels by 2002), it remained popular in the region.
