Koloplet

Koloplet

Anđelko Kovačević

Koloplet is a novel that deals with the intertwining of fates, memories, and identities, making the title word – koloplet – a fundamental metaphor for the structure and meaning of the work.

The plot unfolds on two levels: personal and collective. The narrator returns to his hometown after a long absence and is confronted with the past that returns in fragments – through family stories, local legends, recorded and unspoken events. The novel depicts several generations whose life paths intersect, and their mutual relationships reveal complex patterns of inheritance, guilt, love and resentment. Kovačević combines realistic episodes with reflective parts, creating an atmosphere in which personal history is constantly refracted through the collective – wars, migrations, class and family conflicts shape the characters’ lives as well as their intimate lives. The structure is nonlinear: the narration constantly goes back, connecting seemingly unrelated events into a unique narrative mosaic. The characters are depicted through their inner monologues and short, powerful images of everyday life, which gives the novel a meditative and sometimes lyrical tone.
