Don Mateo gradually loses control of his own life, while his obsession with Concha grows into a destructive passion that emotionally exhausts and humiliates him.

The atmosphere of southern passion, temperament and strong emotions is present throughout the work and further enhances the drama of the events. Louÿs skillfully uses the exotic Spanish setting to emphasize the conflict between reason and passion, freedom and possessiveness.

Through the relationship of the main characters, the author shows how love can become a form of addiction and how the desire for control often leads to suffering and self-destruction.
