Kanonske vizitacije Osijeka 1732-1761
Church visitation records from 1732, 1754 and 1761 document the population, churches, schools and revenues of Osijek’s Tvrđa, Upper and Lower Town, and Aljmaš.
Kanonske vizitacije Osijeka 1732.–1761., prepared by Stjepan Sršan, presents Croatian translations of church visitation records from 1732, 1754 and 1761. Created to inspect parish affairs, these documents extend beyond religious history, recording population, schools, church furnishings and revenues.
Covering Tvrđa, Osijek’s Upper and Lower Town, and Aljmaš, the records offer a framework for comparing communities and tracing change over several decades. Information about churches, their upkeep, education and material circumstances reveals connections between religious institutions and the wider social and economic life of the area.
During this period, Osijek belonged to the Archdiocese of Esztergom as an exempt parish, explaining the preservation of the documents in its archive. Their importance is heightened by the loss of almost all eighteenth-century municipal archival records.
This collection helps fill gaps in the city’s documented past and provides evidence against which earlier interpretations can be assessed. It offers researchers and readers of local history a closer view of Osijek through contemporary administrative testimony.
