Začuđeni svatovi pripada krugu tzv. istarskih romana s naglašenom zavičajnošću, opisima krajolika te idealizacijom maloga hrvatskog čovjeka: seljaka, mornara, pomorca.
The novel "The Zrinjski-Frankopan Conspiracy" (1893) was the most widely read Croatian book for ten years, and, thanks to the interest of readers at the time in historical events, it had a huge influence on younger generations of readers.
The main character is the boy Ivančica, who lives with his mother and grandmother. His family is poor but warm-hearted. Ivančica is a special boy because he has golden hair, which is why he is called "Goldsmith's Little Gold".
The work is a combination of documentary records, personal reflections, and literary episodes, bringing the reader both historical information and an intimate picture of the war days.
