Sirano de Beržerak
Cyrano de Bergerac is a romantic drama set in the 17th century, which follows the talented and witty poet, soldier, and swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac.
Cyrano is known for his courage and sharp tongue, but also for his complex – he has an extremely large nose, which makes him consider himself unattractive and he is afraid to confess his love for his cousin Roxana.
Roxana is a beautiful and intelligent young woman with whom the young, handsome soldier Christian de Neviljet is also in love. Christian does not have the gift of speech or the literacy that Roxana values, so Cyrano helps him – he writes letters and speaks on his behalf, hiding his own feelings. Roxana falls in love with Christian, thinking that his words are proof of great spirituality and love.
During the war, Christian is killed, and Roxana goes to a monastery, mourning her lost love. Cyrano remains her friend and visits her for years. Only on his deathbed, when Cyrano, seriously wounded, comes to their last meeting, does Roxana realize that he was the real author of the letters and her true love all along. However, the realization comes too late, because Cyrano dies at the end of the meeting.
In "Cyran de Bergerac," Rostand glorifies the ideals of love, courage, and honor, depicting a character who remains true to himself and his feelings, despite physical flaws and life's tragedies. The drama is one of the most beautiful expressions of French Romanticism.
