After a series of disappointments, she decides to marry a middle-aged school inspector Bill, convinced that this stability will bring her the peace she seeks. But Murdoch quickly reveals that Mora's security is built on fragile foundations, like a tower of sand that can be knocked down by the first wave.
Forgotten passions, former relationships and emotional debts soon creep into Mora's life, preventing her from leaving the past behind. Each encounter with people from her old life opens new cracks in her marriage and forces her to question her own motives. Murdoch masterfully creates a gallery of characters full of contradictions, who serve as mirrors for each other's anxieties, desires and unspoken truths.
