The writer John Boynton Priestley, otherwise an extremely prolific author, was just making an exceptional foray into SF.

He often used his favorite theme, chronomotion, as a convenient plot device. This plot joke is also used in the novel "The Thirty First of June" (1961), combining Princess Melisent from the time of King Arthur and Sam from our time.
