Nakon što su ih banke i veleposjedici istjerali s posjeda, a suša im uništila usjeve. Među njima je i obitelj Joad: Ma Joad, Otac, njegov brat, djed i baka te šestero djece – tri odrasla sina, jedan od kojih je glavni protagonist Tom, te kći Rose of Sharon. Pridružuje im se i Tomov prijatelj Jim Casy. Međutim, u Kaliforniji je za pridošlice jednako teško: posla nema, kada ga i ima, nadnice su bijedne, a došljaci su sve samo ne dobrodošli…
