The novel Snow (Kar) by Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk is one of his most renowned and politically charged works. The story is set in Kars, an isolated, snowbound town in northeastern Turkey. The protagonist is the poet Ka, who returns to Turkey after twelve years of exile in Germany and travels to Kars—ostensibly to write a newspaper report on a series of mysterious suicides among young women who wear headscarves, but also with the secret hope of reuniting with a past love, the beautiful İpek. A blizzard soon cuts the town off completely from the outside world, creating an isolated stage for dramatic events. Ka finds himself at the epicenter of tensions and ideological clashes involving Western-oriented secularists, Islamic radicals, Kurdish nationalists, and state military forces—conflicts that soon culminate in a bizarre and bloody theatrical coup d'état. Through an atmosphere of anxiety, cold, and the whiteness of snow, Pamuk masterfully explores themes of identity, faith, freedom, political fanaticism, and the East-West divide in contemporary Turkey, crafting a work that is simultaneously a tense political drama and a poignant tale of lost love and human loneliness.
