Jerzy Kosinski

"Steps" is a collection of short stories connected by the character of an unnamed narrator.

The texts are often dark, shocking, fragmentary and full of symbolism. Kosiński uses a minimalist style to create powerful images of alienation, power, sexuality and violence. Some texts are almost allegorical, while others resemble war confessions or psychoanalytic studies. Due to its explicit content and unusual structure, the book caused great attention and won the National Book Award for fiction in 1969 in the USA. However, it later became the subject of controversy due to accusations that the author plagiarized parts and actually received help from other authors (which Kosiński always denied).
