The story begins with the discovery of the body of Giovanni Trincanato, a wealthy but hated businessman, shot dead in his villa. The discovery of compromising photographs and strange evidence, such as poisoned food, further complicates the case. Through interviews with the suspects, Montalbano uncovers a "nest of snakes" - a web of hatred and corruption within the family and the wider community. The truth about the killer and his motives emerges through Montalbano's patient analysis, revealing deep-seated traumas and revenge.
